Action Research Framework



What is action research?

Action research can inform teachers about their practice and empower them to take leadership roles in their local teaching contexts. Action research is conducted by teachers and for teachers. It is small scale, contextualized, localized, and aimed at discovering, developing, or monitoring changes to practice.

Why do we want to do it? An action research project seeks to create knowledge, propose and implement change, and improve practice and performance.
What is the process?The basic components of action research include the following:
(1) developing a plan for an area of focus – in our case implementing a blended learning delivery strategy
(2) implementing the plan
(3) observing and documenting the effects of the plan, and
(4) reflecting on the effects of the plan for further planning and informed action.

How will my organisation be involved?The new knowledge gained can result in changes in practice. Action research is often conducted to discover a plan for innovation or intervention and is collaborative.

What will the project team do?

They will develop the following framework for the action research:
  1. Describe the problem / area of focus.
  2. Define the factors involved in the area of focus (e.g. e-learning, student outcomes, instructional strategies, access to ICT)
  3. Develop research questions.
  4. Describe the intervention or innovation to be implemented.
  5. Develop a timeline for implementation
  6. Develop data collection tools
  7. Carry out the plan (implementation, data collection, data analysis).
  8. Report the results.

What will my tutors need to do?

As the tutors will be participating in PD and trialling their online tool with a group of students, they will be involved in theobserving and documenting the process, and reflecting on the effects of the process / delivery for further planning and informed action.

What is the timeframe?

Throughout the life of the project. We will focus on three areas: teacher professional development needs, the delivery of blended e-learning and the ICT infrastructure required to make this a success.
What will the outcomes be? A report detailing the professional development needs of the teacher, the ICT requirements to embed blended learning on a larger scale and the lessons learned from the trials.
